There are always those dissertations that stand out at submission time, those that simply have to be submitted as the students are genuinely out of time but are nowhere near ready.
As you can imagine, the pressure on a student in this situation is immense with bursaries, job opportunities, and self-esteem under threat. To make matters worse, supervisors and editors are under pressure and often unavailable at this time.
I watched this scenario play out a couple of weeks ago. A nowhere-near-ready student who had to submit, and did.
The trouble is that these situations take their toll. The student’s food and sleep become luxuries before the deadline. They become sick and despite their superhuman effort, the dissertation may well be returned for corrections as quality suffers.
Don’t let this happen to you. Work on the rule of threes. Things take three times as long as you think, are three times more difficult, and problems are threefold.
Another bit of advice. Upskill yourself along the way in non-pressured times. Learn how to use a grammar checker, sort out your references with a referencing tool, learn how to format your dissertation with Word’s styles, study the APA guidelines or whatever style you are using. When time is running out, you need these tools at hand, and you’ll bless yourself.
I wish you a safe, happy, and healthy festive season and academic prosperity in 2024.
