If you’re writing your thesis or dissertation, it is a very good idea to know about applying Word’s Styles to your headers. It may be a bit intimidating to begin using styles, but you will bless yourself forever if you take the plunge! In fact, you can’t not use them – here’s why…
Using styles to set up your section headers allows you to structure your document beautifully, insert an automatic table of contents, change the formatting of all your headers at one level with a single click, move across the sections in the navigation pane, set up hyperlinks and cross-references to tables and figures, their sections, page numbers, etc.
There are also styles for tables that ensure that they look consistent – in their borders, fonts, alignment, etc., and styles for lists, paragraphs, and characters too.
It’s worth taking some time out and studying styles. There are many free resources online, or contact me at [email protected] if you need help.
